The biggest of the big is coming back to Michigan. Head out to The State Theatre in Kalamazoo, Michigan this Saturday, October 19th to see Big Gigantic throw down a new set that they describe as “insane!” HEAR Magazine caught up with Jeremy Salken of Big G while at a stop on their Sky High Tour. They absolutely love to play in Michigan, said Salken. “Every time we play in Michigan, we have the best time. The people are so welcoming and they just know how to get down.”
The Colorado-based duo has been slammin’ out shows since 2008. From the beginning, Big G has stood out from other DJs with their sick combination of electronic infused with live saxophone and drum. They are part of a new generation that plays experimental music called Jamtronica.
The saxophonist/producer, Dominic Lalli, originally from Boulder, Colorado, has been playing the sax since he was a little kid. Lalli earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz from the Manhattan School of Music.
Drummer, Jeremy Salken, originally from Richmond, Virginia, started banging on pots and pans since he was a toddler. His grandfather bought him his first drum set, a Muppet Babies set, and Salken said “and that changed everything.”
Big Gigantic has played at some bad ass festivals such as Bonnaroo, Shambhala Electric Forest, Austin City Limits, and Ultra Music Festival. HEAR asked Salken what were some of their favorite 2013 festivals to play at: “Electric Forest with Grizmatik was awesome and Red Rocks with Rowdy Town – yeah, it doesn’t really get any better than that.”
Big G released Nocturnal on January 11, 2012, which includes 11 mind-bending tracks like “Fantastic,” “The Uprising,” “Its Goin Down,” and “Beginning of the End.” Salken mentions that when creating music, “We do the best we can and make something that we feel like is original.” Nocturnal is available to please your ears at www.soundcloud.com or you can download it at www.biggigantic.net.
During the Sky High Tour, Big G has been playing some of their new stuff from their upcoming album that is dropping soon. “We have been playing some of it live, testing it out, seeing what we like and don’t, and tweakin’ things.” When HEAR asked about their new album, Salken explained that, “Every track has a different vibe…everybody seems to be diggin’ it.”
Big Gigantic has also worked on side projects such as Gigantic Underground Conspiracy, as a super group with members of The Disco Biscuits and Underground Orchestra. On the side as well is another project as Big Grizmatik, featuring Griz and Gramatik. Check out Gigantic Underground Conspiracy and Big Grizmatik at www.soundcloud.com.
Big Gigantic is just as excited as we are for their Kzoo show. “Michigan is one of our favorite spots to hit. So come out and rage with us this weekend!”
