We Will Rock You

Queen and Ben Elton

By Diana Brang-Scott

The rock theatrical, “We Will Rock You” was built around 24 of the legendary rock band Queen’s biggest hits and written by British comedian Ben Elton.

This high energy musical takes place in the future on a planet once called Earth that is now completely controlled by a mighty corporation. Globalization is complete. Individuality is taboo and everyone watches the same movies, wears the same clothes and thinks the very same thoughts. The only music on the planet is generated by the corporation’s computers: it’s all mindless and manufactured, and rock music is unheard of. All musical instruments are banned. The hope of breaking free rests with an unlikely resistance – an alliance of rebel Bohemians, waiting for a hero to lead the battle to bring the power of rock back to the people, and free them and their minds.

“We Will Rock You,” now in its 12th year in London and seen by a staggering 15 million people worldwide. This hilarious, multi-award-winning and record-breaking phenomenon includes a fantastic score of killer Queen tunes you just can’t resist singing along to, such as “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are The Champions,” and, of course, “We Will Rock You.”

I had the opportunity to speak with cast member, and Birmingham native Nathan Keen. He said, “he is very excited to becoming home to Detroit and visit with friends and family while in town.” I asked Nathan, what is the biggest difference between this show and other productions you have been a part of? He said, “This is probably the wildest and craziest show I have ever been a part of!” He went on to say, “The biggest difference is this show for me, is that is has such a heavy rock element to it. It has been referred to as a ‘Rock Theatrical’ because it truly has the feeling of an epic rock performance that Freddy Mercury and Queen would have put on back in their hay day. I asked Nathan what his favorite song in the show is, and he said, “It has to be the final song when we all sing “Bohemian Rhapsody” in its entirety, because the audience’s reactions are incredible. It’s not every show that you get to see people up on their feet, waving their cell phones, screaming and singing along to every song, it makes us feel like rock stars.” Nathan explained that in this show the audience can expect to see some fantastic sets including a broken down Hard Rock Café and dilapidated Graceland. The costumes consist of everything from all white “gaga Kids” to crazy hair and makeup including some replicated costumes Freddy Mercury wore himself onstage.

The performance is high energy and the dance numbers are very physical, this show is one amazing spectacle. “We Will Rock” you opens on Tuesday April 1st and runs through April 13th, 2014. Tickets may be purchased at the Fisher Theatre Box Office or by phone at 313-872-1000, ext. 0.

To conclude with words from Nathan, “Come ready to Rock!”
