Celebrating Twenty Years of Zoolu Party, DDP and Disco Donnie
By Bethany Weems
Disco Donnie is one of the most influential people of our time within the electronic dance music community. It is safe to say he is on the Mount Rushmore of Dance music. Donnie has been towing the line for partygoers for two decades and has been doing it with style and at times gut wrenching integrity. When faced with legal battles earlier on through the anti RAVE laws and legal investigations he pushed through carrying the party torch safely to the other side. He ensured that people did not have to miss out on the acceptance, creativity, magic, music, and overall euphoria that was and is the scene.
Disco Donnie has worked hard to get to where he is today and has the following words of wisdom for anyone trying to make it, “Whether you are an artist, agent, promoter, or whatever it is not an easy process. There are a lot of ups and downs and you have to be committed to it. Never give up and try to do the right thing. A lot of hard work and a little bit of luck and you can be successful in the industry. Just don’t try to do too much too fast. You have to learn. Do one thing at a time and do it right.”
If you would like to see something done right, check out this year’s Zoolu party representing the 20th annual event held for three days in the heart of the Big Easy March 1st-3rd. In conjunction with Ampersand Events, DDP is promising to give a show rich in decadence featuring talent like Micro, Charles Feelgood, Mark Farina, Trent Cantrelle, Krewella, Pegboard Nerds, and Loudpvk among many others. According to their website you should, “Come and laissez les bontemps rouler with thousands of your closest friends as we dance until the wee hours of the morning.”
DDP in the past has partnered with industry giants like Patrick Moxey with Ultra and Pasquale Rotella with Insomniac Productions. His Company has promoted and teamed with countless unbelievable talents like Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Morgan Page, Zeds Dead, Zedd, Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Datsik, Flux Pavilion, and Bro Safari to name a few. DDP is responsible for massive festivals like the Sunset, Alive, Sun City, and Meltdown music festivals to name a few.
DDP is not only an electronic music event and production powerhouse they are also huge into philanthropy and caring about people. When asked to help with relief efforts for the Philippines that were just hit by the worst recorded super storm in the history of the planet, Typhoon Yolanda, he immediately remembered hurricane Katrina and offered to help. In addition, DDP has set up initiatives that include donating $10K to RICH House from their 2nd annual Sunset Music Festival, used $10K of proceeds from their 2013 Meltdown Music Festival for Red Cross, and is dedicated to nurturing and giving back to the music community. The company has pledged their ongoing support to the Moog Foundation and just recently decided to match every donation collected by DDP on their behalf.
Disco Donnie has a lot of memories, stories, and experiences to be proud of in his last 20 years. We can pretty much guarantee that if you go to shows you have been to one presented by Disco Donnie. This year marks 20 years of an amazing journey that is even more alive and thriving than ever. Make a point to support DDP and all of their much-appreciated efforts and celebrate this momentous achievement at one of their many legendary events this year and beyond.
Why go to the faucet when you can experience the ocean? See you at the next event.
