In everyone’s life there is a moment, a choice, a fork in the road when you can follow one path or another, and live completely different lives. Wouldn’t it be great to see where each path might lead…. If/Then is the story of Elizabeth. A woman who is recently divorced and moves to New York City, looking for a fresh start at her life. She is a modern woman, an urban planner, 38 years old and has two great friends Lucas (played by Anthony Rapp) and Kate (played by Tamyra Gray). Kate suggests to her new friend Elizabeth to start using the name “Liz” and go after new experiences and wants her to rediscover love. Lucas suggests that she go back to using her college nickname, “Beth,” and start making professional connections in the city. “Liz” wears glasses, and stays in the park with Kate while “Beth” leaves with Lucas, and the remainder of the show follows both stories simultaneously and depicts two different paths that Elizabeth’s life could take.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Tamyra Gray who plays the part of Kate. Tamyra is best known as one of the top 4 finalists from the first season of the hit TV show “American Idol.” But she is no stranger to the stage or to Broadway. Tamyra was warm and enthusiastic; her genuine positive personality was infectious as she talked about her current role and past experiences. I asked her if she could relate to her character Kate in any way?  She immediately started to giggle and said, “Yes! I am that person that follows the universe and the signs. I believe in chance encounters and I am very connected to my heart, so I follow the things that make me happy; I believe in following the path of happiness. So yes Kate and I are very similar in that way.”

I asked her if there was a message for the audience in this show. She said, “Who hasn’t questioned whether they should have made this choice in life or that one. Our life is all about the choices we make, and this show is very inspiring and we take a deeper look at ourselves and ask am I doing what makes me the happiest and if not then why? Because ultimately our life choices and decisions are based on what we want, so the deeper question becomes what is it that I really want? This shows askes those intimate questions; I’m I living my best life possible?”

If/Then is an original musical written by Tom Kitt, Brian Yorkey and directed by Michael Greif. It is filled with catchy original songs; including the hilarious audience favorite “What the F*#K”.
