North American Tour In Support Of Apocalypse, girl Kicks Off August 25th

Watch New Jenny Hval Video For “Sabbath” Via NPR Music

“Hval’s music, gorgeously rendered on Apocalypse, girl, is electronically driven, ravishingly pretty and sneakily theatrical in its creation of an interior world leaking into and being pressed upon by the larger one.” – NPR Music

“Hval is an artist of many questions—the ones she asks, and those she provokes in the listener. ‘Apocalypse, girl’ swerves from decipherable politics to recondite personal imagery. It’s not a paraphrasable album, but it is a listenable one, its avant-garde tendencies held in check by Hval’s beguiling voice, and by instrumentation that accrues in layers.” — The New Yorker

“Ms. Hval is also a singer of liquid phrasing and timbre, capable of an easy shift from soothing to acidulous. . . Her musical framework is mysterious and pliable, with contributions . . . And these songs skew intensely intimate while complicating the idea of the confessional . . . ” — The New York Times

“The relationship between the reference and the subject matter, potent and intriguingly ambiguous, emits a weird frisson that’s as fascinating in its own way as her voice. Like all of her best work, it finds new ways to provoke, and new parts of your brain to light up.” — Pitchfork

Following the release of new album, Apocalypse, girl, last month, Norwegian artist Jenny Hval is sharing the new video for “Sabbath.” A collaborative effort between band mates Jenny (vocals, synth), Håvard Volden(electronics), Annie Bielski (performance artist and Apocalypse, girl cover model) and Zia Anger (visual enhancement), the remarkable “Sabbath” video was shot entirely on Anger’s iPhone during their European tour, and in the words of Anger is, “best viewed on a cracked screen.” Read Ann Powers interview with Hval, alongside the video premiere on NPR Music, and catch Jenny Hval on tour throughout North America next month. As Powers describes it, “The video for ‘Sabbath,’ debuting here, further enhances the music’s dreamlike quality — but those familiar with experimental art’s intergenerational conversations will also see Hval’s wit in connecting with that history.”
