Even after its first year in the USA, Mysteryland, is still a mystery to most of us, even the most experienced festivalgoer. One of the longest running electronic music festivals, Mysteryland takes place once more at the Bethel Woods Center for the arts, the famous historic spot where Woodstock was held in 1969.
Mysteryland has its roots in the Netherlands being thrown by promoter ID&T, where its humble beginnings started in Lelystad, right in the center of the country. The original lineup featured headliners such as Buzz Fuzz, Dano, Gizmo, and the Prophet, names that sadly go unknown with many of the newer generation of festivalgoers. Mysteryland’s earlier years had a focus on Hardcore, Gabber, Happy Gabber, and Oldschool Hardcore that was extremely popular during the mid 90’s. Taking place annually since its original launch in 1993, Mysteryland has grown year after year into a huge intercontinental weekend long music and arts festival.
For the dedicated music festivalgoer the event starts on Friday May 22nd during the warm up party at the Holy Ground Camping where music starts up at 2pm and goes all day and into the night. Headliners just for the Friday campers include Detroit Techno legend Richie Hawtin, Maceo Plex, and Josh Wink. The Friday warm up party is not to be missed.
The event officially kicks off at 1pm on Saturday with a plethora of music and entertainment to keep you busy for the entire weekend. There are six themed stages of music in addition to the main stage, which include the not to be missed for hard dance fans the Sound of Q-Dance, the Boat, Verboten, Zeitgeist, Owari No Nai by Sin Salida, and Matthew Dear Presents Subversions. All of this and there is still a multitude of other art exhibits to experience. This could be a focus in itself – be sure not to miss all of the interesting non-music exhibits throughout the festival grounds.
Sunday doesn’t slow down with Adam Beyer Presents Drumcode taking over one of the stages along with Webster Hall Presents Girls + Boys, following the previous day up with another wide variety of electronic music acts that will satisfy the very diverse crowd. The festival will continue going strong until 2am. However, the fun doesn’t stop here for most Holy Ground Campers, as the community continues to share their experiences until early in the morning when they slowly start to travel back in different directions to places all over the United States and farther. Safe travels and smile.
