ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL
By Kevin Tshiamala
We are now less than three weeks away from the start of WMC 2014 with ULTRA Music Festival culminating on its final weekend March 28-30th. We were going to wait until Phase 3 to express our excitement, but with the already announced lineup, if you are not already in, you just flat out are not able to go, or you may not enjoy EDM.
The uniqueness of ULTRA Music Festival is wildly overlooked and unprecedented. It being surrounded by one of electronic music’s biggest conferences, Winter Music Conference, bringing in the world’s best DJ’s, dancers, sound equipment, lighting and by a week of major 21st century Gatsby like parties not to mention it is located in the beautiful city of Miami, ULTRA is an event unlike any other.
The festival will be bringing all the best Electronic artists making sure every fan has something to look forward to. Up to Phase 2, the lineup consists of artists such as: 12th Planet, 3BLAU, Claude VonStroke, J.Phlip, Justin Martin, Soul Clap, W&W, DVBBS, Fredde Le Grand, MOTi, Viceroy, The Martinez Brothers, Fur Coat and more. In addition, the festival has added just a slither of variety in hopes of attracting a broader, more diverse audience with acts like Chance the Rapper, Wocka Flocka, Pusha T and Infected Mushroom. Check out the lineup here: http://www.ultramusicfestival.com/lineup.
Four and a half years ago, without a ticket, we jumped in my beat up Ford Taurus – shout out to Notorious – and headed South on I-75 on a mission to attend Electronic Music’s biggest party, ULTRA. We stayed in a room at the Red Carpet Inn; hustled some tickets, made it into ULTRA, made it through the weekend and its various after hours parties.
As expected, the drive home was less favorable than our weekend adventure. We ran out of money and ran out of Gas in the middle of Ohio. With a sociology exam the next morning, we had no choice, but to be rescued by our parents (shout out to Tim Ritchey). Regardless of the consequences that followed, bombing an exam, needing to recover for a week, NSF bank fees, and less than proud parents, we would not have changed anything. That weekend at ULTRA in 2010 was a transcending experience which solidified our friendships, changed our lives for the better, and I do not doubt, changed the lives of many others.
What to look for at Ultra this year. The Live Stage and its Ultra Megastructure will be hosted by Carl Cox and Friends (celebrating 10 years) along with Armin Van Buuren. Furthermore Jack U, a Skrillex and Diplo collaboration, will be making its debut during Ultra weekend. Last, but not least for us Detroiters and others who enjoy Underground House and Techno, ULTRA will be featuring a new stage titled Underground Story | Link Miami Rebels.
With the exponential grown of ULTRA in the last few years, there is plenty happening, plenty more to announce, especially Phase 3, and plenty more to look forward too. To keep you on your heels and at bay during the waiting period, as always, ULTRA Music Festival Compilation 2014 is out March 4th and available for purchase at Amazon.com or any Best Buy Store.
